GCC champs matched with host school for NCAA Championship

FRESNO, Calif. - The NCAA Women's Water Polo committee announced tonight the seedings for the 2024 National Collegiate Women's Water Polo Championship, hosted by Cal on May 10-12 at the Spieker Aquatics Center in Berkeley, Calif.

The Golden Coast Conference tournament champion Fresno State will compete against the host school in No. 3 Cal (17-6) in the quarterfinal round on Friday, May 10. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT.

The Bulldogs (21-7) received an automatic bid to the NCAA championship as the conference tournament champions, along with five other conference champions. The remaining three teams were selected at-large without geographical restrictions. Cal was an at-large bid, falling to UCLA in the MPSF championship game. It was the first time since 2011 that Cal made it to the MPSF championship game.

Fresno State and Cal have faced off twice already this season. The Bulldogs fell in both matches, first a 9-5 loss on Feb. 24 in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational and again 10-6 on March 28.

Fresno State, in just its seventh year of competition, has made the NCAA tournament in each of the last four seasons as an automatic qualifier. The Bulldogs faced then-No. 2 USC in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 and 2023 championship, and defeated Cal Lutheran in the opening round play-in game in 2021.

Fresno State looks for its first-ever trip to the NCAA semifinal round.
